Essential Travel Tips for Glacier Country

Essential Travel Tips for Glacier Country

15 Jul 2025    Things to do in Montana

Welcome to the Flathead Valley! To help you make the most of your trip to our beautiful corner of Montana, here are a few local tips to ensure a smooth and unforgettable adventure in and around Glacier National Park.

  1. Prepare for Mountain Weather: Weather in Glacier National Park and the surrounding mountains can change in an instant. A sunny, warm morning can quickly turn into a chilly, rainy afternoon. The key is to pack layers—bring a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, and a hat, even if the forecast looks sunny.

  2. Rent a Car (and Plan Your Route): Public transportation is extremely limited in this region. A personal vehicle is essential for exploring the towns of Whitefish, Kalispell, and Bigfork and for accessing different parts of Glacier National Park. If you plan to drive the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road, be aware of the vehicle reservation system during peak season.

  3. Book Your Trip Well in Advance: Glacier National Park is one of the most popular parks in the country, and demand for lodging is high. Hotels, vacation rentals, and campsites in the Flathead Valley and around the park's entrances book up months, if not a year, in advance, especially for July and August.

  4. Respect the Wildlife: You are in grizzly bear and black bear country. It is vital to keep a safe distance from all wildlife. Never approach animals for a photo, and never, under any circumstances, feed them. Look for their presence on roadsides and be patient—the best sightings happen when you respect their space.

  5. Be Ready for Limited Cell Service: While you may have good service in the main towns, cell service is very spotty or non-existent inside Glacier National Park and on many remote trails. Download offline maps and park information before you leave your rental, and let someone know your itinerary.

  6. Always Carry Bear Spray: This is a must for any hiking or exploring you do in the region. Bear spray is an effective deterrent and can be purchased or rented locally at outdoor stores like Sportsman & Ski Haus in Kalispell or Glacier Outfitters in West Glacier.

  7. Watch for Elevation Changes: Driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road will take you to Logan Pass at 6,646 feet. At this altitude, the air is thinner, and temperatures are significantly cooler. Stay hydrated and take your time, especially if you're not accustomed to higher elevations.

  8. Support Local Businesses: The Flathead Valley is full of unique, locally-owned shops and restaurants. Grab a cup of coffee at a local cafe, find unique souvenirs, or shop for gear. Be sure to try some local huckleberry products, a Montana favorite.
