Boating

lathead Lake is a boater’s paradise with its expansive, clear waters and stunning backdrop of the Mission and Swan Mountains. Renting Equipment: There are numerous marinas and rental companies located around the lake, especially in towns like Lakeside, Bigfork, and Polson. You can easily rent pontoons for a relaxed family day, ski boats for water sports, or jet skis for a thrilling ride. It's highly recommended to book your rentals in advance, particularly during the busy summer months. Best Places to Swim: The lake is one of the cleanest in the world, making it ideal for swimming. State Parks: Many of the state parks on the lakeshore offer public swimming areas, including Wayfarers (near Bigfork), Finley Point, and Big Arm. These locations often have well-maintained beaches, picnic facilities, and restrooms. Riverside Park (Polson): Located at the south end of the lake, this park has a designated swimming area and a large lawn, making it perfect for families. Public Access Points: You can find smaller, more secluded swimming spots at various public access points all around the lake

Wild Horse Island State Park

Wild Horse Island State Park

Wild Horse Island is a must-visit for a unique Montana experience, but it requires some planning as it is only accessible by boat. Getting to the Island: No Public Transportation: The park itself does not provide transportation to the island. You must use a private boat. Shuttle Services: Several companies on the lake offer shuttle services to and from the island for a fee. Boat or Kayak Rental: You can rent a motorboat, sailboat, or a kayak to get there on your own. Dayton is the closest mainland point to the island, making it a popular departure spot. What to See: The island is a day-use-only park and is home to a small herd of wild horses, bighorn sheep, mule deer, and a wide variety of birds. The island also has hiking trails and beautiful beaches. Important Regulations: Pets are not allowed on the island to protect the wildlife. Day-Use Only: Camping, fires, and overnight stays are prohibited. Wildlife Viewing: Visitors are advised to stay at least 100 feet away from the horses and other wildlife. No Docks: There are no public docks on the island, so you will need to pull your boat ashore at one of the designated landing sites

Cherry Picking

Cherry Picking

Flathead Lake is famous for its sweet cherries, which are a true summer delight. The lake's climate creates the perfect conditions for growing this special fruit. Cherry Season: The cherry harvest typically runs from mid-July through mid-August. The exact dates depend on the weather, so it's a good idea to check with local orchards or fruit stands for the most up-to-date information. Where to Go: The majority of the cherry orchards and roadside stands are located on the east shore of the lake along Highway 35. Many stands also offer other local produce, like huckleberries and other fruits. U-Pick Orchards: For a fun, hands-on experience, some orchards offer a "U-Pick" option where you can harvest your own cherries directly from the trees. This is a great activity for families.
